Lunch & Learn: Unconscious Bias

Thursday, Mar 29, 2018

Join us for an exciting discussion over lunch with Calgary’s own Roché Herbst together with a panel of CREW members and supporters to learn about Unconscious Bias.

We look forward to hearing from Calgary’s own Organizational Psychologist Roché Herbst as she speaks to Unconscious Bias and the effect it can have in a workplace or community.   After introducing us to the research behind Unconscious Bias and the importance of understanding it as well as providing us some strategies and tactics to mitigate our biases, Roché will moderate a panel of CREW members and supporters.

Roché holds a Master Industrial Organizational Psychology degree from the University of South Africa and is in the research process for her Doctorate degree. She is a registered IO Psychologist practicing in Calgary. As a first generation professional female immigrant to Canada with ESL, Roché has a unique perspective of the many diversity and inclusion challenges and opportunities

Our panelists will include:

  • Jyoti Gondek, a well-recognized name in Calgary and City Counsellor of Ward 3, has been actively involved in many facets of Calgary’s real estate community. Prior to taking office in 2017, Jyoti served as the Director of the Westman Centre for Real Estate Studies at the University of Calgary’s Haskayne School of Business.
  • Lorne Graburn is an associate in Dentons’ Litigation practice group with a growing practice in general civil litigation and commercial litigation. Currently serving as the Co-Chair of StartProud, an organization focusing on the mentorship and professional development of LGBTA students, Lorne is also a member of Dentons' Canadian National Dialogue LGBTA Committee, Chair of the local Diversity Committee and a member of the Respectful Workplace Committee.
  • Gillian Lawrence joined Remington in September 2006 as the Director of Planning and was promoted to General Manager of Land Development in 2013. A longtime CREW Calgary member and former chapter President, Gillian currently sits on the CREW Network Board of Directors.
  • Darby Lee Young, Principal Accessibility Strategist at Level Playing Field, has never allowed her physical limitations to stop her from following her dreams. Having been born with mild cerebral palsy, Darby's focus has been applying her personal experiences as a disabled individual to her professional life, so that she can help others with physical challenges chase their own dreams.

The event venue and catering will be provided by Hotel Arts, whose story began in 2005 when a team of local investors purchased and transformed an old Holiday Inn in Calgary’s Beltline/Victoria Park. They had a vision to create a different kind of hotel in the city – design-centric, fashion-forward and innovative in its culinary offering. Over a decade later, the bold vision of their founders still drives the business.
