Come check out what Calgary's new University District has to offer!

The University of Calgary (UofC) and West Campus Development Trust (WCDT) have some exciting developments occurring. On Thursday, June 14, 2018 join CREW Calgary for an insider look at the evolution of Calgary's premier post secondary institution and tour the WCDT site and its Discovery Centre.

INSIDE UNIVERSITY DISTRICT

You will have a 45 minute bus tour of West Campus Development.  A new take on Calgary property, a new take on and meaning of community. The Master Plan for University District is so much more than a community map or visual display of land blocks to be developed. It’s our ‘WHY’; it answers why U/D is needed, the vision for what University District is here to contribute to the city, and a living, breathing expression of the multi-pronged and interrelated elements that make the community what it is.

Through collaboration with key stakeholders and with the input from our surrounding community and neighbours, U/D has been designed to be environmentally sound, socially responsible and financially solid over the long term. It builds on the character of the surrounding neighbourhoods, while strengthening the contribution the University makes to the Calgary community as a whole.

There is also a 45 minute UofC walking tour entitled “Then, Now, and the Future of Our Campus”.

Fifty years ago, the University of Calgary was established on donated ranchland; it was a car-commuter institution at the edge of a growing city. As the surrounding neighbourhoods mature and the city’s transit system expands, the university has become more pedestrian-friendly. With historical images and the current campus as references, this guided tour will present a short history of the transformation, challenges we face as the culture evolves, and opportunities we have in making our campus more vibrant.

After the tours, we will all converge in the Senate Room of the beautiful Hotel Alma, set in the vibrant heart of the University of Calgary campus. Hotel Alma's name derived from the words Alma mater: a school, college, or university which one has attended or from which one has graduated.

CREW Calgary would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge the UofC and WCDT volunteer tour guides’ time they give to making this great event possible.
