Board Member Profile: Kathleen Dockery Brouwer, Secretary
Friday, Jan 5, 2018
I was introduced to the CREW organization by a chance encounter at a Real Estate Forum in 2006. Upon joining, I became an active member of the Education and Events Committee which is responsible for the planning of CREW’s diverse event offerings. In 2014, I accepted the opportunity to chair the newly formed Golf Committee, and with the support and hard work of Committee Members, we facilitated one of CREW Calgary’s largest tournaments as of that year. I joined the Membership Committee in 2015, bringing my events experience to support the functions it hosted. In 2016, I was honored to join the Board of Directors, taking on the role of liaison to the Membership Committee. In 2017, during my second term with the Board, I was the liaison to the Events Committee.
My years of service on the Education and Events Committee, the Golf Committee, facilitating events for and liaising with Membership, has required, and facilitated, the development of my organizational and communication skills. My tenure with CREW Calgary has also provided me with a familiarity with the background of the organization to better serve as a Director on the Board. I wholeheartedly believe in the value of CREW Calgary as it has both enriched and broadened my network, and been a source of tremendous personal as well as professional growth.
I began my career in 1992 with Urbco Inc., a publicly traded real estate development and property management company. Initially hired as administrative support, my role quickly grew and expanded, with increasing responsibilities for record keeping, contract documentation and administration, property management, lease negotiations, due diligence preparation, liaising with tenants, clients, and consultants, among many other tasks. Pursuant to a plan of arrangement, Urbco Inc. re-organized creating Northern Property REIT (“NPR”) and NewNorth Projects Ltd. (“NewNorth”). I remained with NPR in the property management division until 2003, and then transferred to NewNorth, which was more focused on development. In February 2015, I accepted a position with Bentall Kennedy (Canada) LP in its Lease Documentation department, where my responsibilities include negotiating and preparing the lease documents, ensuring that Landlord’s risk is mitigated and policy is adhered to. This role has transferred to my current employer, QuadReal Property Group.
The evolving opportunities, which both my career and CREW have provided me, have developed and honed my organizational and communication skills that are well suited to the position of Director. I believe that I would be a valued addition to the Board of Directors and would be honoured to continue to serve CREW Calgary and its members in that capacity in the next year, taking on the added duties of Secretary.
