Co-Chair Member Spotlight: Laurae Spindler

Wednesday, Jul 21, 2021

Laurae Spindler serves as Chair of the CREW Calgary Mentorship Program and is Vice President & Associate with Scout Real Estate Ltd. Laurae is proud to be a part of Calgary’s first women owned/led commercial real estate brokerage Lori Suba and Eve Renaud.

Laurae began her career in 2007 with a boutique real estate firm in Calgary specializing in the industrial asset class. Following an opportunity to join the landlord side in 2010, Laurae began a tenure that included experience with a publicly-traded REIT, in-house real estate department of a national communications company and most recently a private developer of AAA-class industrial product on behalf of pension fund owners.

Laurae has worked on all sides of the table within Calgary’s industrial & suburban office markets and in 2020 joined Scout Real Estate in a brokerage capacity. Laurae now utilizes her unique, diverse experience to help bring Landlords, Tenants, Vendors and Purchasers together to achieve successful outcomes with their real estate.

Current projects include listings on behalf of Ronmor, Choice REIT, Jim Pattison Group, Porte Communities and Rencor Developments.  Laurae recently helped Jenny’s Delectables (a local gourmet potato producer – check them out!) find and secure a new 13,500 SF warehouse facility for their expanded operations.

1. What do you enjoy most about working in the Commercial Real Estate Industry?

Variety! From my first day in the industry, touring industrial buildings, I was fascinated to see diverse facilities from coffee roasters, auto mechanics, logistics warehouses, manufacturing, gymnastic facilities, the list goes on.  It is a privilege to have the opportunity to see the inner workings of different businesses.

2. How has CREW brought value to your career?

CREW started as a place to attend events and expand my knowledge of the industry.  Over time, and the more I became involved with Committees, the more I came to realize what a unique and powerful network CREW really is.  The Calgary chapter & beyond, is filled with like-minded professionals who come together to support, up-lift and inspire change.  The energy from being a part of this group is invaluable!

3. What are three reasons you would encourage a colleague to join CREW?

CREW offers an extensive network locally & beyond with like-minded professionals who are all champions of the cause to advance women.  Relationships are key to a long-term career filled with opportunities and CREW is a welcoming network to tap into and build those relationships!  It is also a community where you can grow, not only to broaden industry knowledge but also to give back to others and the industry.

4. How are you positively adapting to the work-from-home and work/life challenges presented by COVID-19 measures?

At the beginning of COVID when everyone shifted to work-from-home, I found myself working all the time (like so many others!).  I came to realize the importance of prioritizing well-being, which comes in many forms.  Calling someone to catch up and check in, stepping outside for fresh air, prioritizing exercise, carving out quality family time are all very important in this COVID/digital age when we can work from anywhere, anytime.  I also had to reduce my intake of news/media.  It is critical for a healthy mindset to focus on what is within your control each day.

5. Share an interesting or little-known fact about yourself?

I have bungee jumped, rappelled a building for charity and sky-dived, among other adventures!  I’ve become more risk adverse since having my daughter & son, for obvious reasons, but my husband and I (and our kids!) love a good adrenaline rush.
